I have a solo song in Hair.
This is pretty shocking to me. I have never sung a solo in my life, and my voice is at its untrained worst, after doing nothing with it for 6+ years. Such is the power of auditions, apparently.
When I auditioned, I never expected to get in (see above). I sang a particular song from the show. Now, when I listened to it on the CD, it seemed a little too low for me, but it turned out that the sheet music I own is in a slightly higher key, so it was just about right. And I really pulled it off, much to my surprise, on the day of auditions.
Last week, I was named as one of the three people in the song (one soloist, 2 back-up singers). I assumed I was one of the back-up singers and I was pretty thrilled. I practiced both back-up parts so I would be ready to sing either one when it came time to work the song.
Imagine my surprise today, when I discovered I would be singing the song itself!
Unfortunately, the key in the show is very very high. My high school self could hit those notes no problem, but today it is work. Maybe doable, maybe not. I got one note out of my mouth (having not practiced the song in this key mind you), and the music director asked if I could sing it down.
So I did. And it sounded terrible. It is even lower than on the CD when you sing it an octave down. But, the music director is quite convinced I can't do it up. With the show opening in about 5 weeks, and everything else I have to learn, and still trying to get my singing up to snuff in general, he's probably right.
But I'd still like to try. I think I will try it both ways at home, but if my choices are growling or squeaking, I think I'll go with growling.
I'm not an alto, but I play one on stage! ;)
But a solo, I've never done one of those before. Hope I'm up for it. :)
