I was wrong, it was an amazing book. The prose issues melt away quickly once the story grabs you and just. won't. let. go. It even turns out in the end that there was a reason for the prose (my interpretation only).
So, I should give you the title, huh? It's How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff. This will undoubtably be the best YA book I read all year (yes I know it's January), and in my mind is a strong contender for the Best Reads of the year list (YA and children's books do not get on my list for being good in their category...they have to be good regardless of category).
Basic premise: 15-yr-old Daisy is sent to live in England with cousins she's never met by evil step-mom. Shortly after she arrives (and her aunt is out of the country for a few days) War breaks out (this is modern day, not historical). The five kids are left to struggle for themselves, and then they get ripped apart...
It's hard to do this book justice in a summary. I never knew what would happen next. And the book just gets darker and darker.... Impressive. Very much a crossover into the adult realm of fiction, not just YA.
Just felt I had to remedy mistaken impressions from the previous post.
