I made a New Year's resolution to myself that I would keep track of all the books I read this year. I bought a little journal, and I did just that, including brief (or sometimes not-so-brief) comments about the book. This has allowed me to make a personal "best" list for the year. So far, I've read 59 books this year (not including the 100s of picture books). I'll add one or two more, but I don't think it'll change my best list. You can see the whole list here on Bibliophil.org, but I didn't really use the rating feature or anything like that.
I would say the over all Best book of the year was Kindred by Octavia Butler. It will stay with me for a long long time.
Anyway, here's my list, not including re-reads:
Best "New" Reads of 2005
Fiction - Adult
Cheat And Charmer - Elizabeth Frank
Hungry Hearts - Francine Prose
The Autobiography of G-d - Julius Lester
Slaughterhouse-Five - Kurt Vonnegut
The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Lord Byron's Novel - John Crowley
Ten Thousand Lovers - Edeet Ravel
The Time Traveler's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
Kindred - Octavia Butler
Stardust - Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess
The Pirates! - Gideon Defoe (a different kind of "good" read, but I couldn't bear to leave it off)
Non-fiction - Adult
Outwitting History - Aaron Lansky
Graphic Novels
Invincible - Robert Kirkman
Persepolis - Marjane Satrapi
Watchmen - Alan Moore
Fiction - Kids & YA
The Last Universe - William Sleator
Twilight - Stephenie Meyer
