I ran the library all by myself today. It was an interesting if hectic experience. The actual librarian was downstairs running the book fair, and left me in charge of the library. I only made one mistake, which wasn't entirely my fault...

This class of say 5th graders or so came in to exchange books. They had a substitute teacher, so they were running wild. They found the puppets, and started attacking each other with them, they were swatting each other with books. Interestingly enough, they respected my authority. All I had to say was "C'mon guys, you know better than that" and they stopped acting out. The substitute was not having that kind of luck.

So, a couple of kids came over and asked if they could use the computers while the class was in the library. I made the mistake of saying it was fine by me as long as the teacher approved it. The sub took that to mean that the kids could go wild on the computers. I was stuck at the desk taking care of the kids who actually wanted to read books (novel concept...no pun intended), and couldn't intervene at the computers. They almost broke one of the computers. Finally I walked over to the computers and suggested to the sub that it was time to take the kids back to the classroom. I then had to explain the the kids left behind *why* they couldn't spend their school day printing pictures of pop stars. Oy.

So was that really my mistake?

Other than that, the day went well, and I feel more confident that I can do this.
