Another cute kid story. One of the great perks of my job...
On Monday, an incredibly intelligent and mature 3-yr-old boy came into the room. He speaks both Spanish and English, and he can read already. He was very excited that he now fits the age profile of quite a few of our programs. We had quite the conversation, as his mother looked on getting more and more concerned about rude questions, and where the topic was ultimately heading. To paraphrase the best of it:
Boy: I'm 3! How many do you have?
Me: Well, that's kinda a hard question. See, my birthday is in two days, so today I'm 26 but in two days I'll be 27.
Boy: Wow! You're 27? I'll be 27 when I grow up.
Me: Yup, but now you should enjoy being 3, it's a good age.
Boy: I'm July. When are you?
Me: Well, my birthday is in two days, so I'm October.
Boy: (pausing a second) Why were you born in October?
(At this point his mother in incredibly worried about this conversation.)
Me: Well, my Mommy and Daddy wanted me to be born in October.
Boy: Oh.
Me: Why were you born in July?
Boy: (pauses a second, and then gets a big smile on his face) Because my Mommy and Daddy wanted me to be born in July!
At this point, the mother swoops in before this can go any further. :)
(Oh, and one of the best parts of the whole thing was that he was sucking a big purple lollipop the whole time. He apologized when he first came in that he didn't have one for me. Too cute.)
